Meet the Artist: Monica Costa

Like many modern lasting relationships, I met Monica on Instagram (@mcostaarte). I was in a rabbit hole so deep I can’t remember how I got to her, but I was immediately in love with her work. I reached out about my project, The Carioca Kitchen, that was still in its studs back then, and she agreed to meet me in person on my next trip to Rio.

Monica welcomed me into her home and studio, the most fun Carioca home with a humble view of Cristo Redentor. She was so friendly, so warm, so fun, and I loved this universe instantly. That day, Monica officially became the first Brazilian artist in my shop.

In her main room you will usually find a large piece of colorfully painted fabric waiting to dry. She is known for large scale prints, and from here the fabric gets cut into custom tablecloths, place mats and runners.

Our style and our shop are meant to inspire people to set a better table and create a dining environment they love to linger in, with pieces that evoke the charm, elegance, and joie-de-vivre of Rio. The Carioca Kitchen isn’t just about the actual food, it’s also about *how* we eat, and making the whole experience a little more Brazilian.
